What's the Strongest Beer? Friday, October 23, 2009

This past weekend, I was sitting around with a couple of my closest pals offering small talk about our weekly adventures while we drank an assortment of beers keen to one another's liking. As I drank a variety of these beers, most with a strong alcohol content, a curiosity struck my mind. What is the strongest beer that is/was known to man. As soon as I got home from our gathering, I turned to Google to answer the question stuck in my head. The result: the now retired, Hair of the Dog's Dave. Dave is an English Barley Wine with a whopping 29 percent alcohol by volume. It was made in 1994, winning first place at the 1998 Tornado Barley Wine Festival. This high alcohol content was achieved by taking 300 gallons of beer and freezing it two times, creating just 100 gallons.

SevenPack.net Beer Blog is a fantastic beer blog for anyone interested in micro brewed beer. Ben and Matt, the authors over at Seven Pack, who's philosophy is "We drink the beer, so that the kids don't have to."

There are hundreds of hand picked beers reviewed and tasted by Ben and Matt. How they managed to drink all of those micro brews I have no idea, they must have very strong livers and understanding wife's.

Ben and Matt go into great detail in all their beer reviews. Rating the beers by it's appearance, aroma, taste, color, malt, hops, how accurately the brewers achieve the style of beer and more. Try the beers yourself and chime in with your own comments.

Personally I prefer dark beers, I always have, I like Porters and Stouts. I read their review of Mendocino Black Hawk Stout and had to try it myself. I went out and bought a six pack. It has a coffee and chocolate flavor that blends nicely to create a semi-sweet flavor with a bite that makes it a very drinkable beer just like they said, I really enjoyed it.

When ever I am looking for a new beer to try, I visit Seven Pack and surf the categories until I find a beer that interests me. Visit their website you won't be disappointed.
